Let’s just admit it – we all have them! So, let’s use the records they created to our benefit – and what wonderful records they left. Tips will be provided, starting with what you already know (or at least “think” you know) and following through with trying to prove the story. January 2026 Program Meeting – Public Event

Join us as we welcome Melanie McComb from American Ancestors. The topic for the program is “Constructing a Proof Argument”.

A genealogical proof argument is a detailed, written explanation of the evidence and reasoning used to establish a specific family relationship or fact, especially for complex cases where direct evidence is lacking or conflicting. Learn about constructing a proof argument for the conclusions of your research. Proof arguments are important for making a credible case as to why your work is valid. Melanie McComb will explain ways of seeing sources, analyzing complicated evidence, and putting the big picture into words.

Date: December 16, 2025 Time: 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

The Revolutionary War on Cape Cod: A Tale of Two Shipwrecks

The War for American Independence had significant impact on Cape Cod, and two shipwrecks that occurred during the period are prime examples. The wreck of the tea ship William occurred off of Race Point in December of 1773, just days before the Boston Tea Party. This event was to reverberate from Eastham to Provincetown for months to come. Then, the wreck of the mighty British warship HMS Somerset occurred in November of 1778, also off of Race Point. The Somerset had played a significant role in the War’s early days, and the handling of the wreck, the ship’s crew, and the salvage speaks volumes about the character of Cape Codders of the day.
