Engaging Young People in Genealogy

Join us as we welcome Dustin Axe, Youth Genealogy Curriculum Coordinator at American Ancestors in Boston.  He spearheads youth education programs, including the Family History Curriculum, virtual and onsite field trips, an annual essay contest, and teacher workshops.

Please contact us HERE for the link to the Zoom presentation.

Dustin was graduated from Purdue University with a degree in social studies education.  He is a licensed teacher with over twenty years of experience.  He has taught multiple subjects and developed programs for students across numerous educational settings.  His previous work experience includes the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis and the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Dustin has worked with the Maine Department of Education to establish a program for teachers and administrators in grades 4-8.  This program trains teachers to use inquiry-based lessons incorporating authentic methodologies professional genealogists use.  Lessons guide students through conducting family history research, thinking like a historian, honing their research skills using primary sources, and exploring case studies of important local and national people.  This program goes beyond family trees and helps students to make real-world personal connections to history.
